Weekend Budget Bus Day Trip to Masinga Dam,

1500KSH--EAST AFRICA  CITIZEN
1700KSH--RESDENT
30$-NONE RESIDENT

Masinga Dam, is an embankment dam on the Tana River, the longest river in Kenya. It straddles the border of Embu and Machakos Counties in Eastern Province and is located about 100 km northeast of Nairobi.

Construction of the dam began in 1978.[1] The dam was completed in 1981.[2] It is owned by Tana and Athi Rivers Development Authority (TARDA).[3] The dam is used for power production and is part of the Seven Forks Scheme.[2]

Masinga Dam is a 60 m tall and 2,200 m long embankment dam.[2] The volume of the dam is 4,950,000 m³. The dam contains a spillway and a bottom outlet.[1]

Reservoir

At full reservoir level (maximum flood level of 1,056.5 m)[3] the reservoir of the dam has a surface area of 120 km² and its total capacity is 1,56 billion m³.[1] Minimum operating level is normally 1,037 m. On June 26, KenGen shut down the power plant because the operating level had fallen to 1,035.5 m. At the time of the closure the plant had been producing 14 MW.[4]

Because of its large volume, the reservoir is crucial in regulating the flow of water for the other 4 hydroelectric power plants downstream.

Weekend Budget Bus Day trip to Lake Magadi.

1500KSH--EAST AFRICA  CITIZEN
1700KSH--RESDENT
30$-NONE RESIDENT

Lake Magadi is the southernmost lake in the Kenyan Rift Valley, lying in a catchment of faulted volcanic rocks, north of Tanzania's Lake Natron. During the dry season, it is 80% covered by soda and is well known for its wading birds, including flamingos.

Lake Magadi is a saline, alkaline lake, approximately 100 square kilometers in size, that lies in an endorheic basin formed by a graben. The lake is an example of a "saline pan". The lake water, which is a dense sodium carbonate brine, precipitates vast quantities of the mineral trona (sodium sesquicarbonate). In places, the salt is up to 40 m thick. The lake is recharged mainly by saline hot springs (temperatures up to 86 °C) that discharge into alkaline "lagoons" around the lake margins, there being little surface runoff in this arid region. Most hot springs lie along the northwestern and southern shorelines of the lake. During the rainy season, a thin (<1 m) layer of brine covers much of the saline pan, but this evaporates rapidly leaving a vast expanse of white salt that cracks to produce large polygons. A single species of fish, a cichlid Alcolapia grahami, inhabits the hot, highly alkaline waters of this lake basin and is commonly seen in some of the hot spring pools around the shoreline, where the water temperature is less than 45 °C.

Lake Magadi was not always so saline. Several thousand years ago (during the late Pleistocene to mid-Holocene), the Magadi basin held a freshwater lake with many fish, whose remains are preserved in the High Magadi Beds, a series of lacustrine and volcaniclastic sediments preserved in various locations around the present shoreline. Evidence also exists for several older Pleistocene precursor lakes that were much larger than present Lake Magadi. At times, Lake Magadi and Lake Natron were united as a single larger lake.

Weekend Budget Bus Day trip to Kereita Forest.

Escape into the Forest,Mountain air, captivating views andadventures to share with the whole family, friends and colleagues.

1500KSH--EAST AFRICA CITIZEN
1700KSH--RESDENT
30$-NONE RESIDENT

The Kereita Forest at the southern-most end of the Aberdares range has interesting hiking trails and natural features like the Kereita Cave and Waterfall. The trails were established by Kijabe Environment Volunteers (KENVO), a local community based organization that works to conserve this rich biodiversity. One of these trails, the Carbacid trail, leads to Kereita Waterfall on Gatamaiyu River, and the adjacent cave that is home to a small bat colony.

Kereita Forest bears the distinction of being the site of mass graves for over 5,000 victims of revenge attacks on the local population by the  British colonial administration. These reprisals were triggered by the so called Lari Massacre in March 1953, after Mau Mau combatants attacked and killed about 100 loyalists in this area, including the local colonial Chief Kahangari.

The walk through Kereita Forest starts at the Carbacid Forest Gate. This general area sits on top of an underground natural CO2 reservoir that is currently mined by Carbacid Ltd for industrial and commercial usage, hence the name of the Forest Gate. You can visit a small natural spring in the neighborhood to view water bubbling from underground as this gas makes its way to the surface.

During the first hour, you’ll hike through large open clearings created by the controversial Shamba System. This system is credited with the large-scale destruction of Kenya’s indigenous forests countrywide during former President Moi’s rule. Current efforts by KENVO to rehabilitate this section of the forest are continuously thwarted by local farmers driving their cattle into the forest land, in the process destroying newly planted tree seedlings.
